UWC Partnership with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), Germany

Sikelelwa Mashiyi, one of our Master’s students in Anthropology, was the first exchange student to visit the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) in November 2018. During her stay, Sikelelwa presented her work on South African Spaza Hip Hop at the Department of Anthropology and African Studies. She also conducted research at the African Music Archives (AMA) at Mainz University which are one of the largest and most comprehensive. Read more

The exchange between universities is part of a project founded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for the development of networks and curricula in the study of anthropology in Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, and Germany. The partnership is managed by Dr. Anna-Maria Brandstetter and Yamara Wessling of the University of Mainz and by Prof. Heike Becker at UWC.
